Association of British Science Writers
About the Association of British Science Writers
The Association of British Science Writers (ABSW) exists to help those who write about science and technology, and to improve the standard of science journalism in the UK. We are an association of science writers, journalists, broadcasters and science-based communications professionals.
Founded in 1947, the ABSW has provided science journalists with networking, training, gossip, opportunities and jobs for over 60 years. We aim to promote the highest standards of journalism and writing by encouraging flair and bravery. We also hope to foster a mutually supportive community and to provide an environment for new ideas to develop and flourish.
Through debates and events, our discussion group and our science writing awards we help to create links between science writers, their subjects and markets. List of member benefits.
In July 2010 we established the UK Conference of Science Journalism, a biyearly event following on from the highly successful 2009 World Conference of Science Journalism held in London. Members can access video and podcasts from the 2010 and 2012 conferences.
If you are looking for a science, technology or medical journalist, please visit the Member Directory. Our web directory allows members to advertise themselves to the world and, at the same time, make contact with any other professional in the association. Our website is prominent when searching for "science writers", so we are able to raise the web profile of journalists and broadcasters seeking freelance work. We also have a popular webpage where members can advertise their books.
If you are looking to enter science journalism, take a look at our FAQs, which link to various online resources.
Public relations professionals are welcome to join as non-voting Associate members, and student membership helps those with a relevant interest in science journalism who are seeking to enter the profession.
Members of the ABSW are affiliated to the European Union of Science Journalists' Associations. The ABSW is also a member of the World Federation of Science Journalists.
