The Chinese Science Writers Association held solemnly the second Wang Meilin Science and Literature Creation Award granting ceremony at the China Hall of Science and Technology, Beijing on December 28. Attendees of the award granting ceremony included Xu Yanhao, deputy secretary, vice chairman as well as secretary of the Secretariat of the China Association for Science and Technology, Bai Gengsheng, vice chairman, member of the party group as well as Secretary of the Secretariat of the Chinese Writers Association, Li Jianchen, deputy director of the Planning and Development Department, the State Press and Publication Administration of Radio and Television, Liu Jiaqi, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and head of the 6th Council of the China Science Writers Association, Zhou Zhonghe, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yang Huanming, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zheng Jingchen, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Luo Hui and Zhou Lijun, vice presidents of Academician of the Chinese Science Writers Association, Zhang Daoyi, honorary Chairman of the Chinese Science Writers Association and related leaders and executive directors, winners of the Chinese Science Writers Association Award for Outstanding Popular Science Works and leaders of the press.

The 4th Chinese Science Writers Association Award Granting Ceremony for Outstanding Popular Science Works

The 4th Chinese Science Writers Association Award for Outstanding Popular Science Works began in May, 2015, and such procedures as initial preparation, submission of works, and strict screening through preliminary evaluation and final evaluation lasted more than a year. A total of 345 science books and 84 film and television animation works for evaluation were extensively collected. In the end, a total of 25 books were granted the Gold Award, 48 granted the Silver Award. And 6 film and television animation works were granted the Gold Award, 12 granted the Silver Award.

In view of this evaluation activity, children’s science works still occupy a large proportion among all books. In addition to previously commonly seen popular science works and fairy tales, books focusing on young people’s environmental protection and water conservation education, popularization of eco-cultural science, low-carbon life propaganda and other novel themes also frequently appear in the submission. It is obviously seen that the concept of green life has gradually integrated into the quality education today. Among science and art works, due to encouragement by the market and policies, the number of original Chinese science fiction work submissions is significantly on the rise, so is the number of some scientist biographies and science and technology histories with a high aesthetic appeal and scientific research works that combine creativity and critical thinking. In addition, medical science books, basic science books and comprehensive books are continuously focused on hot spots that attract public attention, cutting-edge science and technology fields and outstanding achievements in science and technology, respectively, and are persistently created. Among the film and television works for evaluation, works with popular theme works close to society and the public, such as health care and scientific life, are still prominent. At the same time, ecological documentaries with a higher level of production also cut a striking figure, reflecting the development trend of harmonious ecological society.

This year’s awarding ceremony reflects the basic landscape of the popular science books and film and television animation works in China from 2013 to 2015. It is not only a great review and exhibition of the creation of popular science in China, but also a great recognition to popular science writers, artists and filmmakers. It is not only the review meeting of the works, but also the grand meeting for popular science writers, which highlights the prosperity of the creation of popular science literature and promotes the carrying out and exchange of our future work.
